Baseball cap embroidery ranges from cheap iron-on patches to caps stitched entirely by hand. This is a guide to what to look for and which designs work well on a cap. To see real examples, browse our hand-embroidered baseball caps.
The three ways caps get embroidered
Hand embroidery is stitched by an artisan with a needle and thread. The thread sits slightly raised, and you can feel the texture. It is what we do.
Machine embroidery is stitched by a computer-controlled machine. It is uniform and fast, with less texture.
Patches are pre-made and sewn or glued on. Glued patches tend to peel over time.
What fabric the cap should be
We make ours on acid wash denim, which holds embroidery well without puckering. In general, avoid polyester blends and mesh trucker backs, which don't hold thread as well.
Brim shapes
A curved brim is the classic baseball cap, the most universal. A flat brim is sportier, snapback style. A dad cap has a soft, unstructured crown. For embroidery, curved-brim and dad caps work best, since they have a clean front panel that doesn't compete with the design.
10 designs that work well on a cap
- A single floral, like a sunflower, rose, or daisy
- Initials or a monogram
- A year in numerals
- A small animal silhouette, like a dinosaur, panda, or bird
- A mushroom and grass scene
- A symbol, like an evil eye, lotus, or sun
- A single word, in clean script
- A small mythological motif
- A custom club or college crest, not a licensed pro logo
- A coastal motif, like a small palm tree or anchor
What size should the design be
For a cap, two to three inches wide is the sweet spot. Smaller can get lost, larger dominates the front panel. For a monogram, one and a half to two inches works well.
Thread colour combinations
Acid-wash denim with yellow has the most impact, especially for florals. Denim with white is clean and sporty. A black cap with white thread gives the most contrast, good for geometric designs. A black cap with gold or copper looks slightly festive. Beige with olive or burgundy is muted and vintage.
Sizing and fit
Our caps are free size with an adjustable back strap, which fits most adults. If you have a notably small or large head, message us before ordering so we can confirm fit.
Care
Spot clean stains with mild soap and a soft brush rather than soaking the whole cap. If it needs more, hand wash cold. Never machine wash, which damages the cap's structure. Air dry on a round form like a bowl or jar to hold the shape. Never iron over the embroidery. Store on a hook or stand rather than folded.
How ours are made
Every cap is stitched by hand by women artisans in our Bulandshahr studio. Custom caps take about 2 to 3 days, and more detailed designs take 5 to 10 days.
