If you're looking for cap decoration ideas, here are 15 that work, from someone who makes hand-embroidered caps every day. We stitch ours by hand in our Bulandshahr studio. If you'd rather skip to finished pieces, browse our hand-embroidered baseball caps.
You can decorate a cap with hand embroidery, machine embroidery, sewn-on patches, or heat-applied prints. We do hand embroidery, stitched in real thread on denim.
15 cap decoration ideas
1. Single floral motif on the front
The most universal. A sunflower, rose, daisy, or wildflower on the front panel. Our sunflower cap is the most popular one we make. It works with almost any outfit.
2. Initials or monogram
Your initials on the front. Two-letter monograms work best at a cap's small scale.
3. Year in numerals
A birth year, anniversary, or graduation year in block numerals.
4. A small scene
A little woodland scene, like mushrooms with grass and pine. Our Meadows cap is in this cottagecore style.
5. Small animal
A dinosaur, panda, owl, bee, or bird, kept simple at the cap's scale.
6. A single word
A name, a place, or a word that means something to you, in clean script.
7. A symbol
Evil eye, lotus, sun, moon, crescent. Carries meaning without being literal.
8. A date in roman numerals
MMXX, MMXXIV. A date that matters, stitched simply.
9. A custom crest
Your local club, college, or friend group. Skip licensed pro team logos, which are a trademark risk.
10. Couple's initials
Two initials joined by a small heart or ampersand. Good for an anniversary or wedding gift.
11. A fruit or food motif
A tomato, watermelon slice, mushroom, coffee cup, or lemon. Small and fun.
12. A small repeating pattern
A subtle pattern along the brim or back strap.
13. A name in Hindi
Your name in Devanagari script. It looks especially good on dark caps with light thread.
14. A side-panel detail
A small detail on the side panel instead of the front. Quieter and a bit unexpected.
15. A motif under the brim
A tiny motif on the underside of the brim, only seen when you tip the cap back.
A few to skip
Iron-on patches tend to lift at the corners over time. A printed photo looks flat on a cap. Rhinestones fall off and look dated. And a cap is small, so one clear motif works better than several crowded together.
How ours are made
Every cap is stitched by hand by women artisans in our Bulandshahr studio, on acid wash denim with an adjustable back strap. Custom caps take about 2 to 3 days, and more detailed designs take 5 to 10 days.
