Hand-embroidered sweatshirts feel different from embroidered tees. The heavier fabric holds denser embroidery, the cosier shape makes the design feel personal, and they get worn often in cooler weather. They also make some of the best gifts we offer, since they are both useful and personal.
This is a guide to embroidered sweatshirts: what to look for, what designs work, and how they are made. Browse the full range of hand-embroidered sweatshirts anytime.
We stitch ours by hand on cotton fleece. The heavier fabric holds denser embroidery than a tee, so the designs feel substantial, and the thread sits slightly raised rather than flat like a print.
The best designs for sweatshirts
1. Custom name or initials
The most popular. Your name on the chest, or initials in cursive. Our custom name sweatshirt is the bestseller here.
2. Floral garlands
The heavier fabric handles dense floral embroidery well, like a garland of mixed blooms across the chest or shoulder.
3. Animal motifs
Tiger, eagle, panda, bear, fox. There is room for more detail and thread variation than on a lightweight tee.
4. Botanical and nature scenes
Trees, mountains, coastal scenes, woodland motifs. The temple vine sweatshirt is a winding vine across the chest with leaves and small temples stitched in.
5. Couple's monograms
Two initials joined by an ampersand or a small heart. Sweatshirts make good anniversary gifts, since they get worn through the cold months.
6. Spiritual symbols
Evil eye, lotus, om, third eye, roman numerals. The substantial fabric gives these designs more weight.
Fit
A loose unisex fit, boxy with a dropped shoulder, is the most universal and is our default. An oversized cut suits a streetwear look. A very slim sweatshirt tends to make embroidery look forced.
Colours that work
A cream or beige sweatshirt with cream embroidery is subtle and refined. Black with gold thread is slightly festive. White with multicolour is cheerful and gift-friendly. Sage green with cream is muted and vintage. Burgundy with gold is warm. Navy with white is clean and sporty.
Care
Hand wash cold and gentle, or use a gentle machine cycle inside out in a laundry bag. Use mild detergent and skip bleach. Air dry flat to hold the shape rather than tumble drying. Iron on the reverse only, never over the embroidery. Store folded flat or on a hanger, not hung by the shoulder seams.
How ours are made
Every sweatshirt is stitched by hand by women artisans in our Bulandshahr studio. A custom name takes about 2 to 3 days, and a more detailed design takes 5 to 10 days.
Why they make good gifts
An oversized fit forgives sizing mistakes. Sweatshirts get worn often, unlike formal pieces. Custom embroidery makes a plain garment feel made for the person. And they photograph well.
