Short answer: Embroidery art is needle and thread used to make a picture rather than just a decoration. Today it shows up in four forms: hoop art for the wall, thread painting, India's regional textile traditions, and wearable pieces where the art goes out the door with you.
Google Trends shows "embroidery art" up 60% in India over five years, with "embroidery hoop art" up 160%. People are not just buying embroidered things. They are looking at them as art. We stitch the wearable kind in Bulandshahr, so here is how we think about it.
The four forms (tap each)
1. Hoop art
The piece is finished and hung in the same wooden hoop it was stitched in. Small, cheap to frame, and the reason "hoop embroidery" searches doubled. Florals, portraits, names and dates are the common subjects. How to finish one: embroidery hoop guide.
2. Thread painting
Long and short stitch laid in many shades so colours blend like paint. Feathers, petals and faces are where it shines. It is the slowest kind of embroidery and the clearest test of skill.
3. Indian textile art
Chikankari, kantha, phulkari, sozni, aari and Lambani are art traditions in their own right, several protected by Geographical Indication tags. Start with our guide to Indian embroidery styles, then sozni and Lambani.
4. Wearable art
The same thread painting, on a tee or sweatshirt. Our parakeet tee takes about 24 hours of stitching. The difference from a framed piece is that it gets seen every time you wear it.
How to read the skill in a piece
| Look at | Skilled | Rushed |
|---|---|---|
| Colour changes | Shades blend with no hard line | Visible stripes of each colour |
| Stitch direction | Follows the shape, like fur or petal veins | All stitches parallel |
| Edges | Clean, no fabric peeking through | Ragged, gaps in fills |
| Stitch variety | 3 or more stitch types in one motif | One stitch for everything |

How to display embroidery art
- In the hoop: trim fabric to an inch past the ring, gather it at the back, cover with felt.
- Framed: lace the fabric over acid-free board. Keep glass off the stitches with a spacer so they are not flattened.
- Out of the sun: direct light fades cotton floss within a couple of years.
- On you: wash cold, inside out, dry flat. See how to store and iron hand embroidered clothes.

Questions
Is embroidery considered fine art?
Increasingly, yes. Museums such as the V&A collect it, and contemporary textile artists show in galleries. The line between craft and art is mostly about intent and skill, not the medium.
Why is hand embroidered art expensive?
Hours. Thread is cheap. A thread painted motif can take a full day or more. See how many hours go into one tee.
