Short answer: An embroidery hoop is two rings that clamp fabric tight while you stitch. The inner ring is solid, the outer ring has a screw. If you are buying your first one, get a 6 inch wooden hoop. It fits most beginner designs and a chest motif on a t-shirt.
Every piece in our Bulandshahr studio starts on a hoop. Our artisans keep several sizes within reach and swap between them through the day. This is what they would tell you if you sat down next to them.
Hoops are trending in India

Parts of a hoop
Which size hoop do you need?
| Size | Best for |
|---|---|
| 3 to 4 inch | Initials, small names, cap fronts, sock cuffs, keychains |
| 5 to 6 inch | First projects, chest motifs on tees, pocket designs |
| 7 to 8 inch | Larger florals, back designs, framed hoop art |
| 10 to 12 inch | Wall pieces, wedding hoops, cushion covers |
Rule of thumb: pick a hoop about an inch bigger than your design on every side, so the ring never crushes finished stitches.
Types of hoop (tap to open)
Wooden hoop
The classic. Grips cotton well, cheap, and looks good enough to frame. Choose one with smooth, sanded rings and a brass screw. Rough wood snags thread.
Plastic hoop
Light and washable. Some have a lip on the inner ring that grips better than wood. Cheap ones crack at the screw, so do not overtighten.
Spring tension hoop
A metal spring ring snaps inside a plastic ring. Quick to move around a garment, which is why people like it for t-shirts. Holds a little less tight than a screw hoop.
Flexi or display hoop
Faux wood plastic with a soft vinyl inner ring. Made for finishing and hanging hoop art, not for heavy stitching.
Adda (large frame)
The big wooden standing frame used for aari and zardozi work on sarees and lehengas. Not a hoop, but it does the same job at full fabric width.
How to hoop fabric in 6 steps
- Loosen the screw and separate the rings.
- Lay the inner ring flat on a table.
- Place the fabric over it, design centred.
- Press the outer ring down over both.
- Tighten the screw a little, pull the fabric evenly all round, then tighten again.
- Tap the fabric. It should sound like a small drum.
On a t-shirt: do not pull knit fabric drum tight or the design puckers when you take it off. Iron a light stabiliser to the back first, then hoop it snug, not stretched. Our full walkthrough is in can you embroider a t-shirt yourself.
Avoid hoop marks: take the hoop off whenever you stop for the day. Rings left on overnight press a crease into cotton.

Embroidery hoop price in India
Hoops are cheap. The thread and the hours are the expensive part. When we checked in October 2026:
- A pack of three 9 inch wooden hoops was listed on Meesho at Rs 216.
- Wholesale wooden hoop sets on IndiaMART were listed between Rs 150 and Rs 250 a set.
- Single plastic hoops from 4 to 9 inch were sold individually on Meesho.
Prices change daily. Buy a set of mixed sizes rather than one, because you will want a small one for names and a big one for florals.
Hoop art and wedding hoops
Searches for wedding embroidery hoops grew 1,350% in five years. A finished hoop is now a gift on its own: names and a date, a couple's initials, a portrait of a pet. Trim the fabric to an inch past the ring, run a gathering stitch round the edge, pull it tight at the back and cover with felt.
If you want the same idea on something you can wear, we stitch wedding dates in Roman numerals and couple initials on tees and sweatshirts. See wedding gifts and personalised embroidery gifts.
Questions
Can you embroider without a hoop?
Yes, for small stitches on stiff fabric. On anything soft the fabric bunches and the stitches pull. A hoop is the cheapest upgrade you can make.
Wooden or plastic hoop for beginners?
Wooden. It grips cotton better and you can frame your first piece in it.
Why does my fabric keep going loose?
The inner ring is too smooth. Wrap it with a strip of cotton tape and the grip improves a lot.
