Short answer: An embroidery kurta is a kurta with thread work at the neckline, placket, cuffs, yoke or hem. Pick the style by occasion first (chikankari for summer days, mirror work for mehendi and Navratri, aari or zardozi for weddings), then turn it inside out to check whether the work is by hand or by machine.
We are a hand embroidery studio in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh. We do not sell kurtas. We get asked about them every week anyway, because people who love embroidery always end up at the kurta question. So here is the honest guide we give them.
Embroidered kurtas are having a moment
Five years of Google Trends data for India (Oct 2021 to Oct 2026) shows "embroidery kurta" up 200%. The more specific searches grew even faster.

Where the embroidery sits on a kurta
Placement decides how formal a kurta looks. A little work at the neck reads as everyday. Work that runs down the placket and spreads across the yoke reads as festive. Full hem borders are for weddings.
Men or women? Tap to open
Embroidery kurta for men
Keep the work tight to the neckline and placket. Tone on tone (white on white, navy on navy) looks expensive and goes with anything. Contrast thread works best in one colour only. Straight cut, knee length, with churidar or straight pants. For a groom or brother of the bride, this is where zardozi or heavy aari belongs.
If you want the handwork without the full ethnic set, a hand embroidered shirt worn untucked does the same job at a dinner. See our guide on how men can wear embroidery without it feeling costume-y.
Embroidery kurta for women
The yoke is the star. A dense yoke with a plain body is easy to style. All-over buti (small scattered motifs) suits straight and A-line cuts. Kurti sets with matching dupatta are where the searches are growing fastest, and the rule is simple: if the kurta is heavy, the dupatta should be light, and the other way round.

Hand or machine? A 30 second check
- Turn it inside out. Hand work shows small knots and thread tails. Machine work shows a white bobbin line and a stiff backing patch.
- Compare two motifs. Hands do not make twins. If every flower is identical, it is computer embroidery.
- Ask how long it took. A maker knows the hours. A reseller will guess.
Neither is wrong. Machine work is fine for price and speed. Just do not pay hand work prices for it. More in how to avoid fake handmade clothing.

How to wash an embroidered kurta
- Cold water, inside out, mild detergent.
- No wringing. Roll it in a towel and dry flat in the shade.
- Iron from the back, embroidery face down on a folded towel.
- Zardozi and heavy zari: dry clean only.

Questions
Is a hand embroidered kurta worth more?
If you will wear it for years, yes. Hand stitches go through the fabric and hold up to washing. A computer embroidered kurta is fine for one season of events.
Which colour embroidery kurta suits men?
White, ivory, navy, bottle green and maroon carry embroidery well. Tone on tone thread is the safest choice.
