Hand embroidered monogram on a denim cap, the kind of small mark used for logo embroidery

Short answer: An embroidery logo is your brand mark stitched into the fabric instead of printed on it. Use machine embroidery for hundreds of uniforms. Use hand embroidery for small batches, client gifts and pieces people should keep. Either way, simplify the logo first: fewer colours, no gradients, letters at least 6 mm tall.

We hand embroider logos and team names for companies that want their merch to feel like a gift, not a giveaway. These are the conversations we have with every client before a single stitch.

Searches for "embroidery logo" in India rose 60% between October 2021 and October 2026 (Google Trends), and "computer embroidery" is now one of the top 25 embroidery searches in the country.

Hand or machine for your logo?

Machine (computer) embroidery Hand embroidery
Setup Logo is digitised into a stitch file Logo is traced onto each garment
Speed About 5 minutes for a 5,000 stitch chest logo Hours per piece
Every piece Identical Same design, tiny human differences
Feel Flat, with a stiff backing patch inside Soft, raised, no stiff patch
Best for Uniforms, events, large runs Client gifts, leadership kits, small teams, premium merch

Deeper comparison: hand vs machine embroidery, which lasts longer.

5 rules for a logo that works in thread

Tap each rule. Check your logo against all five before you send it anywhere.

1. Keep letters at least 6 mm tall

Thread has thickness. Below about 6 mm, letters like e, a and s fill in and turn into dots. If your tagline is tiny, drop it and stitch the wordmark only.

2. Count your colours

Every colour is a thread change. Two or three colours look sharp. Six look busy and cost more. Send hex or Pantone codes so the thread match is close.

3. No gradients or shadows

Thread cannot fade smoothly from one shade to another the way ink can. Replace gradients with two flat colours.

4. Thicken hairlines

Lines thinner than about 1 mm disappear. Outline thin shapes or make them bolder for the stitched version.

5. Consider an outline version

A logo stitched as an outline in back stitch or chain stitch is lighter, faster and often more elegant than a solid fill. It is the version we suggest most for tees.

Where the logo goes, and how big

Left chest: 7 to 10 cm wide (most popular)Right chestSleeve: 5 to 7 cmCap front: up to about 11 cm wide

Note that the wearer's left chest is the one over the heart, which appears on the right when you face them. More on spacing and fabric in our embroidery placement guide and baseball cap embroidery guide.

What to send your embroiderer

  • A vector file (AI, SVG, EPS or a vector PDF). A screenshot from your website is not enough.
  • Colour codes, hex or Pantone.
  • Placement and size, in centimetres.
  • Garment: tee, sweatshirt, cap, and the fabric colour.
  • Quantity and size split, for example 10 M, 14 L, 6 XL.
  • Deadline, with a few days of buffer. Hand work cannot be rushed at the end.

Questions

Is embroidery better than printing for a logo?

For anything people will wash often, yes. Prints crack and fade. Stitches go through the fabric. See embroidered or printed t-shirt.

Can any logo be embroidered?

Almost any, once it is simplified. Photographic logos, gradients and very small text need a stitch-friendly version first.

What does logo embroidery cost?

Machine work is priced by stitch count. Hand work is priced by hours. Our breakdown is in custom embroidery cost per shirt.
