The 6 main letter styles
1. Block letters
Straight lines, clean and bold, the most readable from a distance. Best for short names, single letters, and monograms. Easy to read and ages well, though it can feel a little formal.
2. Cursive or script
Flowing letters that look hand-written. Personal and soft, good for full first names. Harder to read at small scale.
3. Serif
Letters with small feet, the kind books are set in. Classic and timeless, works well in solid colours. Takes a little more time to stitch because of the detail.
4. Sans-serif modern
Clean letters without the feet. Minimalist and contemporary, pairs well with minimal-design shirts.
5. Roman numerals
Letters as numbers, like IV, X, or MMXXIV. Used for years, anniversaries, and important dates. Looks deliberate.
6. Devanagari (Hindi script)
Names in Hindi. We make these often. Looks especially good on dark fabrics with light thread. We confirm spelling carefully by WhatsApp before stitching.
Single letter, two letters, or full name
A single letter is minimal and monogram-style, like a personal mark. Two letters is a classic monogram, usually first and last initial, or two people's initials joined. A full first name is friendly and casual, best for gift items. A full name with surname only suits a name-tag look. Initials with a small heart or symbol add warmth, like our heart variant.
Thread colour: matching or contrasting
Tone-on-tone, like cream on white or dark grey on black, is subtle and refined, visible up close, best for everyday wear. High contrast, like white on black or gold on navy, is bold and statement-making, best for occasion wear or gifts. Popular pairings are black with white, white with black, white with a colourful thread, and cream with olive or burgundy.
Placement
Three placements work, in order of popularity: the left chest where a pocket would sit, the default; the centre chest below the collar, better for symmetrical monograms; and the upper sleeve or cuff, quieter and more discreet. We don't recommend back-of-neck placement, which looks like a label.
Size
A small letter, around an inch, is elegant and subtle, best for single initials. A medium size is readable and balanced, the default for most names. A larger letter is a statement, best for short single names or one big initial.
How to order
Add the piece to your cart, then in the cart note write your letters, the style you want (block, cursive, serif, and so on), and a thread colour if you have one in mind. For Hindi or another non-Latin script, type it twice, once in your script and once in English. We call or WhatsApp to confirm before stitching, since a missed accent or apostrophe can spoil the whole piece.
How long it takes
Custom pieces take about 2 to 3 days.
