Personalised Embroidered Handkerchiefs: A Gifting Guide

White cotton handkerchief with a hand embroidered name in the corner

The handkerchief is the oldest personalised gift there is, and it survives for a practical reason: it's the cheapest object you can put someone's name on that they'll actually keep.

Here's what to know before ordering one.

Why the corner, always

Embroidery on a handkerchief goes in one corner. Not the centre, not the edge, not scattered.

The reason is use. A handkerchief gets folded into quarters and put in a pocket, and the corner is the part that shows. It's also the part that sees the least friction — centre embroidery would sit exactly where the cloth is used, and it wouldn't last a year.

Standard placement is roughly 2–3cm in from both edges of one corner. Any closer and the hem crowds it; any further and it disappears into the fold.

Why the name goes in the corner

Fold it the way it will be used and watch where the stitching ends up.

Lettering styles

Style Character Best for
Script Flowing, traditional Full first names
Block capitals Clear, modern Initials, short names
Three-letter monogram Formal Weddings, formal gifts
Single oversized initial Confident, minimal Everyday, men's
Signature Personal, irreplaceable Memorial and milestone gifts

On the three-letter monogram: the traditional order is first, last, middle — with the surname initial enlarged in the centre. It is not first-middle-last, and this is the single most common mistake in personalised gifting. If you'd rather it read straightforwardly, say so when ordering.

Three letters, which order?

One name, three ways to stitch it. The second is the one most people get wrong.

For: Anil Bhushan KapoorABKAKBA

Plain initials: A B K. Reads straightforwardly, first, middle, last. Fine, but if you want this, say so when ordering, because a monogram is laid out differently.

Traditional monogram: A K B. First, last, middle, with the surname initial enlarged in the centre. It is not first, middle, last. That swap is the most common mistake in personalised gifting.

Single oversized initial. Confident and minimal. Good for everyday and men's handkerchiefs, and for long names where letters would otherwise get cramped.

On signatures: if you have someone's handwriting on paper, it can be traced and stitched exactly. A grandparent's signature on a handkerchief is the version of this gift people keep for decades. It's also the one we're asked for most around memorials and milestone birthdays.

Letter size

Between 1.5cm and 2.5cm tall works for almost everything. Smaller than about 1cm and script becomes an unreadable squiggle; larger than 3cm and it dominates a folded hanky.

If a name is long, use initials rather than shrinking the letters. A cramped full name looks worse than a clean monogram.

How big should the letters be?

One corner, drawn to scale. Tap a letter height.

Fabric and size

Cotton is the standard and the right answer — it's absorbent, it washes hot if it needs to, and it takes embroidery well. Linen is more elegant and creases more. Silk looks beautiful and is essentially decorative.

Typical sizes:

  • Men's: around 40×40cm
  • Women's: around 28×28cm
  • Pocket square (decorative only): 30×30cm, usually silk

A pocket square and a handkerchief are different objects. The pocket square is for show and lives in a jacket breast pocket; the handkerchief is for use and lives in a trouser pocket. Don't gift one as the other.

What they cost in India

Type Typical price
Plain cotton handkerchief ₹30 – ₹100
Machine-embroidered initial ₹150 – ₹300
Hand-embroidered initial or name ₹400 – ₹700
Hand-embroidered monogram or signature ₹600 – ₹1,000
Sets of 3–6, hand-embroidered ₹1,200 – ₹4,000

Why they work as gifts

No sizing. The single biggest advantage over any garment. Nothing to get wrong, nothing to return.

The right price for awkward occasions. Under ₹1,000 covers a lot of situations where a larger gift would be strange — a colleague, a friend's parent, a wedding favour, a return gift.

They suit sets. Three or six in a box, each with the same monogram, reads as considerably more than the sum of its parts.

Occasions they suit: weddings (groomsmen, and as favours), Rakhi, Father's Day, corporate gifting, retirement, and memorials — where a signature handkerchief is one of the few gifts that genuinely lands.

Ordering: what to get right

  1. Check the spelling in writing. Send it typed, not over a phone call. Most personalisation errors are transcription errors.
  2. Confirm monogram order if you're using three letters.
  3. Ask for a mockup before stitching starts.
  4. Allow the time. Hand-embroidered lettering runs 5–8 days plus shipping. Add a week around Diwali, Rakhi and Christmas.
  5. Order a spare if it's for a group — someone is always added late.

Care

  • Wash cold, gentle cycle, or by hand. Hot water shrinks cotton thread faster than cotton cloth
  • Don't wring the embroidered corner — press water out flat
  • Dry flat in shade
  • Iron on the reverse, or around the embroidery, never directly over it
  • No bleach — it destroys dyed thread long before it whitens the cloth

Treated this way a hand-embroidered handkerchief lasts decades. They're one of the few gifts that get handed on.

We hand-embroider names, initials, monograms and signatures on soft cotton handkerchiefs. Real thread, stitched in Bulandshahr.
