Simple yellow floral hand embroidery on a white cotton t-shirt

Short answer: The simplest embroidery designs use one or two stitches: a lazy daisy flower, a fishbone leaf, a back stitch heart, a single initial, a vine of French knots. Each can be finished in an evening and looks good on a tee, a blouse neckline or a handkerchief.

Most of what sells best at our studio in Bulandshahr is simple. A small flower on the chest. A red heart. One initial. Simple designs show off clean stitching, and they are the ones people actually wear every week.

Simple designs for a blouse

Neckline

A chain stitch line half an inch inside the neck edge, with lazy daisy flowers every inch. Follow the curve by drawing it from the paper pattern before you cut.

Sleeve border

Two rows of running stitch in contrast colour, with French knots between them. Kantha style, very forgiving.

Back motif

One bigger flower or a paisley in the centre of the back. The single place a blouse can carry a bold design and still look simple.

Three rules that make simple look expensive

  1. Two or three colours, not seven. Our thread colour guide has pairings for light and dark fabric.
  2. Leave space around it. A small motif with breathing room looks deliberate. See where embroidery should sit on a t-shirt.
  3. Fewer strands for fine lines. Two strands for outlines, three or four for fills.

Questions

What is the easiest embroidery design?

An outline heart in back stitch. One stitch, one colour, fifteen minutes.

How do I transfer a simple design to fabric?

Tape the drawing to a window, tape the fabric over it and trace with a water soluble pen. For dark fabric, use a white chalk pencil or a stick and stitch sheet.

Which stitch should I learn first?

Back stitch. It outlines, writes letters and builds the hand control every other stitch needs. See stitch names and uses.
