Short answer: Sozni is a fine hand embroidery from Kashmir, worked with a thin needle in silk or wool thread, mostly on pashmina shawls. The name comes from the Persian sozan, meaning needle. The best sozni is so fine that the design can look the same on both sides of the shawl.
Searches for sozni embroidery in India doubled between 2021 and 2026 (Google Trends, +100%). It is one of the most refined needle crafts in the world, and one of the most imitated. Here is what to know before you buy or admire one.
What makes sozni different (tap each)
A needle, not a hook
Kashmir has two big embroidery traditions. Aari uses a hook and makes chain stitch quickly. Sozni uses a fine needle and mainly satin, stem and darning stitches. Slower, flatter, finer.
Dorukha: two sided work
In dorukha sozni, the motif is worked so it appears on both faces of the cloth, sometimes in a different colour on each side. Global InCH describes stitches so close they are reinforced against individual warp threads.
Motifs
Paisley (ambi), chinar leaves, flowering vines, cypress and Mughal garden patterns, usually in one to three colours.
How long a sozni shawl takes
Approximate times reported by Heritage Moda, a Kashmiri pashmina seller. Real times depend on stitch density.
For scale: one of our hand embroidered tees takes up to 24 hours. A full sozni shawl can take longer than a degree course.
Who makes it
- Naqash draws the design.
- Chapangur stamps it onto the shawl with carved wooden blocks.
- Tarah-guru stitches a sample and decides the colours.
- The embroiderer stitches the whole piece. Traditionally the person who starts a shawl finishes it, because every hand stitches slightly differently.

For pashmina itself, Outlook Traveller notes Kashmir Pashmina has held GI status since 2008, so look for the tag. General hand vs machine checks are in how to avoid fake handmade clothing.
Fine needlework you can wear every day
Our studio is in Uttar Pradesh, not Kashmir, and we do not make sozni. We do work with the same tool, a fine needle, on cotton you can wash.
