T-Shirt Embroidery Designs: A Style Guide From a Hand Embroidery Studio

T-shirt embroidery designs cover a huge range, from a single flower on the chest to a full back-panel scene. This guide breaks down the main types, where each one works, and how to wear them.

We hand-stitch t-shirt embroidery in our Bulandshahr studio. Browse our floral embroidered t-shirts or embroidered t-shirts for women to start.

The 6 main types

1. Floral motifs

The most common and most versatile. A single flower, a garland, a wildflower spray, a botanical vine. Lavender floral on cotton is a good default that pairs with most things.

2. Custom name or initials

Your name or initials stitched on the chest. Custom initials are one of the most popular things we make. Block letters read clearly, cursive feels more personal.

3. Animal motifs

Tiger, eagle, panda, owl, dinosaur, horse, bird. Animal embroidery works at small scale but needs careful stitching to look right.

4. Landscape and scenic

Palm tree, banana plant, mountain, coastal scene. The Palm Tee is a single coconut palm stitched in a few shades of green.

5. Geometric and abstract

Lines, grids, circles, abstract shapes. Clean and modern.

6. Cultural and spiritual

Evil eye, lotus, om, paisley, mirror work. These carry meaning. See our spiritual and evil eye embroidery, or the mirror work shirts with small mirrors stitched into the cotton.

Where the embroidery sits

Left chest is the usual spot and suits almost anything. Centre chest works for symmetrical designs. A full-front spread is a statement. Along the collar, on a sleeve, or low on the hem is quieter. A full back is a big piece.

Colours that work

White shirt with colourful thread lets every colour show at full strength. Black with gold or copper looks slightly festive. Black with white gives the most contrast, good for geometric designs. Cream with olive, burgundy, or sage feels muted and vintage. Navy with white or yellow is clean.

A few things to keep in mind

Wash embroidered tees inside out in cold water, by hand or on a gentle cycle. Skip hot water and the tumble dryer, which can damage the thread. Iron only on the reverse, never straight over the stitching.

How it's made

Every piece is stitched by hand by women artisans in our Bulandshahr studio. Custom pieces take about 2 to 3 days, and more detailed designs take 5 to 10 days.
