Short answer. You can buy hand embroidered T-shirts in India through four channels: a local tailor or karigar, an Instagram seller, a marketplace listing, or a studio that owns its embroidery floor. Only the last will show you the reverse side of the fabric before you pay, which is the one test that settles it.

Search “embroidered t-shirt near me” and you get a map full of tailoring shops that mostly do machine work on uniforms. That is not what you are looking for, and the search engine has no way to know that.
Here is the honest version of each channel, written by people who sell through two of them.
The four ways to buy, compared
| Channel | What you pay | What can go wrong | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local tailor or karigar | ₹300 to ₹900 per motif, and you supply the tee | No shrinkage control, usually machine heads, no written proof | One-off monograms, repairs, altering something you already own |
| Instagram seller | ₹700 to ₹1,800 finished | Machine work sold as hand work is common. Photos are frequently not their own | Fast, low-stakes gifting when you have seen a friend's order |
| Marketplace listing | ₹500 to ₹1,500 | The listing photo and the shipped garment are often different products | Price hunting, if you accept the risk |
| Studio with its own floor | ₹1,199 to ₹4,464 finished | Slower. Three to seven day queue before stitching even starts | Custom names, gifting with a deadline, anything you plan to wear for years |

The four checks that separate hand work from machine work
Do these before you pay, in any channel. They take about two minutes.
- Ask for a photo of the back of the fabric. Hand embroidery leaves knots, thread tails and uneven float on the reverse. Machine embroidery leaves a uniform bobbin grid and usually a layer of stiff backing. This one test settles most arguments.
- Ask what GSM the blank tee is. A real answer is a number. We use 220 GSM combed cotton for tees and 400 GSM for sweatshirts. “Premium quality fabric” is not an answer.
- Ask how many hours the design takes. Anyone who has stitched it knows. Two hours for a small initial, fourteen or more for a back panel. Vagueness here means the work is outsourced or automated.
- Ask who fixes a thread pull in year two. Studios that expect you to still own the tee in year two have an answer ready.

Buying online, but from India
If you want hand work specifically, buying direct from a studio is the only channel where the person answering your message can see the embroidery frame from where they are sitting. Mansi runs ours. When a customer asks whether a name will fit across a chest panel in Devanagari, she measures it on an actual tee rather than guessing.
That is the practical difference. Everything else is marketing.

Our own range: hand embroidered T-shirts (100 designs), women's embroidered tees and tops, men's embroidered shirts, and custom embroidered T-shirts if you want a name or a date on it.

What about buying from abroad?
Etsy and similar marketplaces list a lot of Indian hand embroidery, including ours. Prices there carry marketplace fees and international shipping, so the same tee costs more. If you are ordering to an Indian address, buying direct is cheaper for you and better for the studio. If you are abroad, the marketplace handles customs paperwork, which is worth something.
A note on turnaround before you commit
Hand work is not stocked. Nearly everything is made after you order it. Our queue runs three to seven days, then two to fourteen hours of stitching, then courier. The full timeline is here, but the short version is: order fourteen days before a gifting date, twenty-one during Diwali or wedding season.
How long a hand embroidered tee takes
Tap a stage. Solid is the shortest case, hatched runs to the longest.
Studio queue. Hand work is not stocked. Nearly everything is made after you order it, so it waits three to seven days before stitching starts.
Stitching. Two to fourteen hours at the frame, depending on the design. The smallest slice of the wait.
Courier. Three to six days to reach you.
Door to door. Seven to fourteen days in total. Festival weeks run longer.
When to order. Fourteen days before a gifting date, twenty-one during Diwali or wedding season. Same-day dispatch on hand embroidery means it was already made, or not made by hand.
Anyone promising same-day dispatch on hand embroidery is shipping something that was already made, or something that was not made by hand.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy real hand embroidered T-shirts in India?
Directly from a studio that owns its embroidery floor, which is the only channel where you can get a photo of the reverse side before paying. Local tailors, Instagram resellers and marketplaces all sell embroidery, but most of it is machine work.
How do I know if a T-shirt is hand embroidered or machine embroidered?
Ask for a photo of the back of the fabric. Hand work shows knots, thread tails and uneven float. Machine work shows a uniform bobbin grid and a stiff backing layer. The front can look similar; the reverse never does.
Is it cheaper to give my own T-shirt to a tailor?
It looks cheaper. You pay ₹300 to ₹900 for the motif instead of ₹1,199 for a finished garment. But you also buy the blank, carry the shrinkage risk, and most local shops run machine heads rather than hand frames.
How long does a hand embroidered T-shirt take to arrive in India?
Seven to fourteen days door to door: three to seven days of studio queue, two to fourteen hours of stitching, then three to six days of courier. Festival weeks run longer.
Can I order hand embroidered T-shirts from outside India?
Yes. International orders usually go through a marketplace listing, which handles customs paperwork but adds fees and shipping. If you are ordering to an Indian address, buying direct from the studio costs less.
