What 180, 220 and 240 GSM Cotton Actually Feels Like

GSM means grams per square metre. It is the weight of the fabric, and on a plain cotton tee it is the single number that best predicts whether the shirt will feel cheap or substantial. It is also the number most stores leave off the page. Here is what each weight actually feels like.

140 to 160 GSM

Thin. This is the weight of most promotional tees and the cheap multipacks. Hold it up and you will see light through it. It is cool in heat, which is the one genuine advantage, but it loses shape at the neckline within a few months and it shows every outline underneath.

180 GSM

The standard high-street tee. Light but not see-through, drapes close to the body, and it is what most branded tees in India sit at. Perfectly fine as a layer or in peak summer. Too light to carry dense embroidery, because the weight of the thread pulls the fabric and you get puckering around the design.

220 GSM

This is where a tee starts feeling deliberate. Noticeably thicker in the hand, holds its shape at the shoulders and hem, and opaque even in white. It is heavy enough to carry a hand-embroidered motif without the fabric distorting around the stitching. Most of our tees are 220 GSM for exactly that reason.

240 GSM

Heavyweight. It has structure, so an oversized cut hangs away from the body rather than clinging. Warmer to wear, so it suits everything except peak summer afternoons. This is the weight we use where the design is dense, because the fabric needs to hold several thousand stitches without pulling.

350 GSM and up

Sweatshirt territory. At 350 GSM cotton fleece you get a brushed soft inside and genuine warmth. Our sweatshirts sit here. Above 400 you are into heavy winter weight.

Why it matters more on embroidered clothing

Thread has weight and it has tension. When you work several thousand stitches into a lightweight knit, the fabric gathers around the design and the motif sits in a small dimple. On 220 or 240 GSM the fabric is stable enough to hold the stitching flat. This is why a hand-embroidered tee is almost never made on 180 GSM, and why anyone selling one at that weight is cutting a corner you will notice after three washes.

How to judge it without a label

• Hold it up to a window. Light through it means under 180.
• Bunch the hem in your fist. Heavier cotton springs back; light cotton stays crushed.
• Look at the shoulder seam. On light fabric it collapses; on 220 and up it holds a line.
• Check the neckline on a used one. Light tees go wavy first.

Questions people ask

Is higher GSM always better?
No. In an Indian summer a 240 GSM tee is warm. The right weight depends on when you will wear it. Higher GSM is better for durability, shape retention and carrying embroidery, not for comfort in heat.

What GSM are Vee Threads tees?
Mostly 220 GSM cotton, with 240 GSM on the pieces that carry denser designs. Our sweatshirts are 350 GSM cotton fleece.

Does GSM change after washing?
The number does not, but cotton shrinks slightly and the surface softens. A 220 GSM tee feels a little softer after a few washes without losing its structure.

Why do some stores not list GSM?
Usually because the number is low. It is a cheap fact to publish if you are proud of it.
