Ordering a custom embroidered hoodie in India is straightforward until you get to the details — and the details are where orders go wrong. Wrong fabric weight, wrong placement, a name spelled from a WhatsApp message nobody double-checked.
Here's what to settle before you pay.
Hand or machine — decide this first
Everything else follows from this choice.
Machine embroidery is the right answer if you need volume and consistency: a college batch, a startup team, twenty pieces that must look identical. It's fast, it's cheaper per unit past about 15 pieces, and the output is uniform.
Hand embroidery is the right answer if the piece is a gift, if the design has organic or illustrative elements, or if the fact that a person made it is part of the point. It costs more, takes longer, and no two come out identical — which is either the drawback or the entire reason, depending on why you're buying.
A rough dividing line: under 10 pieces where the design matters, go hand. Over 20 pieces where the logo matters, go machine.

For group orders, expect a per-unit drop of 10–25% past about 15 pieces on machine work. Hand embroidery scales much less, because the labour doesn't compress.
Fabric weight is not a detail
This is the thing most buyers skip and most regret.
- Under 280 GSM — too light for anything dense. The embroidery pulls the fabric and the front panel distorts within a few washes.
- 300–330 GSM — fine for names, initials, and small motifs.
- 350 GSM and up — what you want for any substantial embroidery. Heavy enough to carry the thread weight without puckering, and it holds shape through repeated washing.
Also check whether it's cotton fleece or poly-cotton. Polyester blends hold colour better but hand embroidery sits differently on synthetic fibre and the needle drags. Cotton fleece is the better base for hand work.
Placement

Avoid dense embroidery across the pocket opening or over the side seams. Both flex, and thread eventually pulls.

Add a week around Diwali, Christmas and Valentine's — every custom embroidery workshop in the country is backed up in those windows. If it's a gift with a fixed date, order a month out.
Six questions to ask before paying
- What GSM is the blank? If they can't answer, they don't know their supplier.
- Hand or machine — and can I see stitch-out photos of both sides? The reverse tells you the truth.
- Will I approve a mockup before stitching starts?
- What's the policy if the spelling is wrong on delivery? Get this in writing before, not after.
- Is the size chart for the actual blank you're using? Embroidery blanks vary wildly between suppliers.
- What's the wash guidance? A seller who says “machine wash normally” on hand embroidery hasn't tested it.
Group and corporate orders
For a team, a batch or a corporate gifting run, three things save you:
Collect sizes properly. Send the actual measurement chart, not S/M/L. Oversized fits especially — a “L” varies by 4cm between manufacturers.
Lock the artwork early. Every design revision after production starts costs days.
Order 10% spare. Someone always joins late, and re-running a small top-up batch costs more per unit than the original run.

- Wash inside out, cold, gentle cycle
- Don't wring the embroidered area — press water out flat
- No dryer; heat is what causes puckering around the stitching
- Dry flat in shade
- Iron on the reverse only
Hand embroidery outlasts print by years. A screen print on a hoodie cracks and flakes; thread does neither. But it only lasts if it isn't tumbled at high heat.
