Why the Same Design Costs More on a Sweatshirt Than a T-Shirt

Why fleece is slower to stitch

Three physical reasons, none of them about effort.

• Needle resistance. 350 GSM fleece is about 60 per cent heavier than jersey. Every stitch takes more force, and the artisan's hands tire faster, so the sustainable pace drops.
• Denser fill. Pile scatters light and swallows thin lines. A motif that reads cleanly on a tee needs more stitches per square centimetre on fleece to read at all.
• The topping stage. Laying the film, stitching through it, then rinsing it out and re-lifting the nap adds close to an hour on a mid-size design.

So which should you buy?

Depends entirely on when you will wear it. A tee gets twelve months a year; a sweatshirt gets about four in most of India. That works against the sweatshirt on cost per wear, and it is the honest weakness in the case for one. We ran those numbers here.
