Why your specific letter matters
Some letters embroider beautifully at small scale, others are trickier. Letters with curves, like S, C, O, Q, and G, are fluid in cursive but can look bulky in block. Letters with long verticals, like I, T, L, and F, are elegant in serif but can look thin on their own. Letters with crossings, like X, K, and A, are dramatic and work in both block and cursive. Letters with diagonals, like M, N, W, V, and Z, are dynamic and often best at small scale. Letters with enclosed shapes, like B, D, P, R, and O, are substantial and hold detail well.
Letter A

Letter S
A block S is substantial and good at larger sizes. A cursive S follows the natural flow of the letter and is a popular choice.
Letter M
M has visual weight and carries well at any size. A block M is balanced, a cursive M is elegant with its double peak, and a monogram M sits inside a circle or wreath.
Letter R
A block R reads well from a distance. A serif R is classic and a little formal, good on cream or beige. A cursive R has a swirling tail, almost like a calligraphy mark.
Letter K
A block K is angular and modern. A serif K has small feet on the verticals that add weight. A cursive K is trickier, since the diagonals can blur, so block or serif is the safer choice.
Other letters
B, D, and P have enclosed bowls that hold their shape at small scale, and work in block, serif, or cursive. Tall thin letters like I, L, T, and F are best with serifs or in cursive, since plain block versions can look like single lines. Round letters like O, Q, and C work especially well inside floral wreaths. Diagonal letters like V, W, X, Z, and N are most dramatic at small scale. Letters with horizontal bars like E, F, and H read clearly in block and feel grounded in serif. Letters with descenders like G, J, and Y benefit from a cursive flourish.
What style suits which use
For everyday wear, a block or cursive letter in a single colour. For a couple's gift, two letters with a heart, like R and M. For a wedding or formal gift, a serif letter in a small floral wreath. For a minimal streetwear look, a large block letter off-centre. For a baby gift, a small cursive initial in a soft colour.
Thread colour
White on black gives the most contrast, good for block letters. Black on white is clean and formal, good for serif and cursive. Gold or copper on a dark shirt looks slightly festive. Tone-on-tone, like cream on white, is subtle and refined. A colourful thread on white is cheerful, good for gifts.
Letter size
A small letter, around an inch, is subtle and suits a single initial on the chest. A medium size is readable and balanced, a good default for a two-letter monogram. A larger letter is a statement, best for one big initial.
