Why Hand-Embroidered Sweatshirts Are Worth the Price

Hand-embroidered sweatshirt showing why hand-stitched clothing costs more than machine-made

Short answer. Mostly, you're paying for hours. A small chest name takes one artisan about 4 to 5 hours, and a full front panel 12 hours or more. Our hand-embroidered sweatshirts cost from about ₹1,999 to about ₹5,000 for most designs, on 350 GSM cotton fleece. They're worth it if you'll wear one for years. If you need it for one winter, they aren't.

Most people pause at the price the first time they see a hand-embroidered sweatshirt. That's fair. A plain fleece sweatshirt costs a fraction of it, and the cloth underneath is much the same kind of cloth.

The difference is the stitching, and the stitching is time.

Tap the sweatshirt: what the price is actually paying for

Four things sit inside the price tag. None of them is the fabric.

Time. Every motif is stitched one thread at a time. A mid-size chest motif on 350 GSM fleece takes one artisan about 8 hours.

Skill. The women stitching it have spent years on the craft. No two pieces come out identical, and those small variations are the proof that a person made it.

Durability. Hand embroidery sits deep in the fabric. Washed with care, it is made to be worn for years.

Livelihood. Artisan wages and the studio floor take about 42% of a mid-range sweatshirt's price. Every piece is stitched in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh.

Hours and cost share come from Vee Threads production records.

The hours, by price

Price follows the size of the design and the number of thread shades, because those decide how long one person sits with the piece.

Each block is one hour of an artisan's work. Dark blocks are the minimum, light blocks the upper end.

A machine does a chest logo in 8 to 20 minutes. That's why a machine-embroidered sweatshirt from a big brand costs far less, and why ours can't. How long hand embroidery takes on fleece breaks the hours down further.

What else is in the price

  • The fleece. 350 GSM cotton fleece, brushed on the inside. Heavy enough to hold a dense design flat without puckering.
  • The finish. Every thread end is secured on the reverse, so the design survives washing.
  • Making it to order. Most pieces are stitched after you buy them, so there's no warehouse of unsold stock behind the price.

How long it lasts

Hand embroidery is stitched into the cloth. It doesn't crack or peel like a print, and a pulled thread can be restitched. Washed inside out, cold, and dried flat, a sweatshirt like this lasts as long as the fleece does. How to wash a hand-embroidered sweatshirt has the routine.

When it isn't worth it

  • If you need fifty matching sweatshirts for a team or an event. Machine embroidery is the sensible buy.
  • If you'll only wear it one season. You'd be paying for durability you won't use.
  • If you need it in three days. Hand work can't be rushed, and custom pieces are dispatched within 7 days.

When it is

  • You'll wear it every winter for the next few years.
  • It's a gift with a name, a date or an initial on it.
  • You want the only one. No two hand-embroidered pieces come out the same.
