What a hand embroidered T-shirt costs in India in 2026
Four numbers do most of the work here.
| Measure | Value | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest price | ₹1,199 | A small single motif, one placement, two to three thread shades |
| Median price | ₹1,517 | Where most buyers land: a name, a monogram or a chest-sized motif |
| Average price | ₹1,795 | Pulled up by a handful of large back-panel designs |
| Highest price | ₹4,464 | A full back panel, 14 or more artisan hours, nine thread shades |

Notice how tight the middle is. Twenty-one of forty designs sit inside a ₹300 window. That is not a pricing accident. A chest-placement motif takes roughly four to six hours to stitch, and four to six hours of an artisan's day costs what it costs, whether the motif is a sunflower or your daughter's name.
Why one tee is ₹1,199 and another is ₹4,464
Six things move the number. In rough order of how much they matter:
| Factor | Effect on price | Example from our catalogue |
|---|---|---|
| Stitch hours | Biggest single driver. Roughly ₹100 to ₹130 per artisan hour of skilled work | Sleepy Cat at 2 hours vs Eagle back panel at 14+ |
| Design area | A back panel is four to six times the stitched surface of a chest motif | ₹1,199 chest motif vs ₹4,464 full back |
| Thread shades | Each extra shade means re-threading, colour matching, more waste | 2 shades on a monogram, 9 on a jungle scene |
| Stitch type | Satin fill eats thread and time. Back stitch outlines are quick | Fill-heavy florals cost more than line work |
| Base garment | 220 GSM combed cotton tee, pre-shrunk and bio-washed | Roughly ₹250 to ₹300 of every tee |
| Customisation | A name needs a written proof, a redraw and zero margin for error | name and initial embroidery carries a small premium |

What each design type should cost you
If someone quotes you far outside these bands for hand work, ask why. Under them, ask harder.

The ₹600 embroidered tee problem
You will see hand-embroidered tees listed at ₹499 and ₹699. Do the arithmetic with me for a second.
A decent 220 GSM blank costs around ₹270 landed. Courier across India is ₹120 to ₹160. Payment gateway and platform fees take another 6 to 9 per cent. That is already past ₹450 before a single stitch. Which leaves about ₹150 for two hours of skilled hand work, packaging, and the seller's margin.
Do the ₹600 tee arithmetic
Step through the costs that come out before a single stitch.
The blank. A decent 220 GSM blank costs around ₹270 landed.
Courier. Shipping across India is ₹120 to ₹160 per order.
Payment and platform fees. Another 6 to 9 per cent. The total is already past ₹450 before a single stitch.
What is left. About ₹150 for two hours of skilled hand work, packaging and the seller's margin. At that price it is machine embroidery, which takes eight to twenty minutes.
Ask for a photo of the reverse side. It is the fastest way to tell hand from machine work.
It does not add up, because it is not hand work. It is machine embroidery, which takes eight to twenty minutes and is a perfectly good product sold under the wrong name. We wrote a whole piece on how to tell the two apart, and the fastest test is a photograph of the reverse side.
If your budget is genuinely under ₹1,500, that is fine. Real hand work exists at that price. See what ₹1,200 to ₹1,500 actually buys and our gifts under ₹1,000 edit for the smaller pieces.

Does the price change if you order more than one?
Barely, and this surprises people who are used to printing. A screen printer's cost collapses at volume because the setup is the expensive part and each additional pull costs pennies. Hand embroidery has no setup to amortise. The tenth tee takes the same six hours as the first.
What does drop is the design and sampling cost, which we spread across the run. On corporate gifting orders of 20 pieces or more, that works out to somewhere between 8 and 12 per cent off the single-unit price. Not the 60 per cent people expect. We say this on the first call, because it saves everyone a week.
So where does the money actually go?
Artisan wages and the studio floor are the largest line, at roughly 44 per cent of a mid-range tee. The blank garment is another 17. The rest is thread, design, wash and press, packaging, shipping and payment fees.
We broke one ₹1,517 tee down rupee by rupee in this cost breakdown. And if you are still weighing this against a printed tee, the cost-per-wear maths is here.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a hand embroidered T-shirt cost in India?
Between ₹1,199 and ₹4,464 at Vee Threads, with a median of ₹1,517. A small chest motif or custom name sits around ₹1,300 to ₹1,500. A full back panel with multiple thread shades runs ₹3,000 and above.
Why is hand embroidery more expensive than printing?
Because it is 2 to 14 hours of a person's time per garment, against roughly 40 seconds of machine time for a screen print. There is no batch discount on human hours, which is why bulk pricing barely moves.
Is a ₹600 hand embroidered T-shirt possible?
Not with genuine hand work. The blank tee, courier and payment fees alone reach about ₹450. Anything advertised as hand-embroidered at that price is almost always machine embroidery. Ask for a photo of the reverse side of the fabric.
Do I pay extra for a custom name?
A small premium, yes. A custom name needs the layout redrawn, a written spelling proof approved by you, and there is no margin for error once the needle moves. Our custom name tees start at ₹1,294.
Does ordering 20 tees reduce the price much?
By roughly 8 to 12 per cent, not more. Design and sampling costs get spread across the run, but the stitching hours per garment stay the same. Corporate orders are quoted on that basis.
