Most of our studio's time goes into roses, sunflowers and birds. Then someone sketches a cow being abducted by a UFO, and we make it anyway.
Those odd ones are some of our favourite pieces to show off. This is a tour of the strange shelf, with a dial to find out how weird you are willing to go.
Why a joke looks better in thread
A funny printed tee is merch. You have seen it at a mall kiosk, and it cracks after twenty washes. The same joke stitched by hand is something else entirely. Thread has texture and shine, so a cartoon crocodile suddenly looks crafted rather than cheap. Someone spent hours on your silly shirt, and that contrast is half the fun.
It also lasts. Thread does not peel or fade the way print does, so the joke is still landing years later. Our wash test comparison shows the difference.
The weirdness dial
Turn it up one notch at a time and stop where you get nervous.

Level 1: playful
Watermelon
A juicy slice of summer. Your aunt will call it cute and nobody will ask questions. The perfect gateway into fun tees.
Watermelon tee
Level 2: cheeky
Cute Dinosaur
A small, friendly dinosaur. Adults wearing dinosaurs is a quiet statement that you have decided not to grow up entirely, and we respect it.

Level 3: bold
Crocodile
A green, blue and pink crocodile stretched across the chest of a black tee. It is not trying to be cute. It is trying to be the most interesting shirt in the room.

Level 4: mischievous
Devil Cupid
A cupid with horns, outlined in red and gold chain stitch, across the back. Love with a bit of trouble. It looks like a plain black tee until you turn around, which is the whole trick of back embroidery.

Level 5: unhinged
Alien Cow
A purple UFO abducting a cow, worked thread by thread by someone with real skill. There is no deeper meaning. That is the meaning.
Alien Cow teeThe rest of the strange shelf
- Apple: a pastel apple with a lilac worm peeking out. Sweet at a distance, funny up close.
- Black Sheep: for the proud misfit. We explain the phrase in our motif meanings guide.
- Octopus: eight arms spread across the back of a white tee.
- Whimsical Doodle and Random Doodles: a notebook margin in thread.
- Match Day and Piste: tiny footballers and skiers. More of these in our hobby t-shirts guide.

Is it too weird for that?
The honest question everyone asks before buying a strange tee. Pick the place and get a straight answer.
Where are you wearing it?
Safe: Apple, Watermelon, Dinosaur. Small chest motifs pass as smart casual, especially under an open overshirt.
Risky: Alien Cow. Save it for Friday, or for a manager with a sense of humour.
Back designs like Devil Cupid are a clever office cheat: from the front, in your chair, it is a plain black tee.
Safe: Watermelon and Dinosaur. The relatives will find them sweet.
Risky: Devil Cupid at a puja. Black Sheep at a family function is a statement, and the family will read it as one.
Safe: Crocodile or Apple. They give the other person something easy to ask about, which is the whole point of a first date.
Risky: Devil Cupid on a first date is either a perfect joke or a warning. You know your date better than we do.
Safe: all of them. This is exactly where the Alien Cow belongs.
Tip: in a class where everyone owns the same mall tees, the hand-stitched one is the one people remember.
Safe: anything. Airports are strange places already.
Tip: back designs get seen in every queue, so expect a stranger or two to ask where you got it.
How to wear a loud tee without looking like a costume
One rule: let the shirt be the only joke. Plain jeans or chinos, plain shoes, nothing else with a print. A strange motif with a calm outfit looks confident. A strange motif with a loud outfit looks like a dare.
Black tees make bright thread pop and look slightly more grown-up, which is why most of our quirky designs are on black. If you want more outfit ideas, our styling guide has six full looks.
The best gift for people who already have everything
Quirky tees are the easiest gift to get right for the hard-to-shop-for person. Nobody already owns a hand-stitched alien cow. It says you thought about their sense of humour, not their size of house. Pair it with our tee quiz: take it as them and see what comes up.

The whole strange shelf, plus everything sensible, lives in Hand Embroidered T-Shirts. Creatures of every kind are in animal tees, and the darker side is in gothic tees.
Every Vee Threads tee, sensible or not, is hand-embroidered to order on 220 GSM cotton by women artisans in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh.
