A date is a strange thing to put on clothing. It means nothing to anyone who does not already know, which is exactly why it works as a gift.
This covers how to write one correctly, which date to choose, and what to check before you order something that cannot be returned.
How Roman numerals work
Seven letters do all of it.
I is 1. V is 5. X is 10. L is 50. C is 100. D is 500. M is 1000.
Numbers are built by adding letters from largest to smallest. So 2026 is MMXXVI, made of M and M for 2000, XX for 20, V for 5 and I for 1.
The one twist is subtraction. When a smaller letter comes before a larger one, you subtract it. IV is 4, not 6. IX is 9. XL is 40. This trips people up more than anything else, and it is the most common mistake we see in submitted text.
Writing a full date
Dates are usually written as three groups separated by full stops or dots.
Take 14 February 2020. The day is 14, which is XIV. The month is 2, which is II. The year is 2020, which is MMXX. So the date reads XIV.II.MMXX.
A few more, so the pattern is clear. 1 January 2024 is I.I.MMXXIV. 30 November 2019 is XXX.XI.MMXIX. 25 December 2021 is XXV.XII.MMXXI.
Check the order you want. Day first is normal in India and most of the world. Month first is the American convention. Neither is wrong but they produce different results, so decide which one the person receiving it will read it as.
Read a date the way we stitch it
Seven letters: I 1, V 5, X 10, L 50, C 100, D 500, M 1000. A smaller letter before a larger one subtracts.
XIV.II.MMXX Day 14 is X (10) plus IV (4, because I before V subtracts). Month 2 is II. Year 2020 is MM (2000) plus XX (20).
I.I.MMXXIV Day 1 is I. Month 1 is I. Year 2024 is MM plus XX plus IV. That IV at the end is 4, not 6.
XXX.XI.MMXIX Day 30 is XXX. Month 11 is XI (10 then 1). Year 2019 is MM plus X plus IX (9, because I before X subtracts).
XXV.XII.MMXXI Day 25 is XX plus V. Month 12 is XII. Year 2021 is MM plus XX plus I.
Written day first, as in India. Month first would swap the first two groups, so decide which way the person will read it.

Which date to choose
The obvious one is a wedding date, and it is the most requested. It is not always the best one.
A wedding date is public. Plenty of people know it. A date that only the two of you know carries more weight: the day you met, the day one of you moved cities, the day you got the keys to a flat.
Other dates worth considering are a child's birth date, the date a business started, or the date somebody arrived home. For a gift to a parent or grandparent, a date from their life rather than yours usually lands harder.
Roman numerals or ordinary numbers
Both work, and they do different jobs.
Roman numerals are private. Somebody looking at the shirt sees a pattern of letters and moves on, which is the appeal. They also look more formal and sit well as a small design.
Ordinary numbers are immediate and readable, which suits a birth year on its own. A year like 1998 stitched plainly has a different energy from MCMXCVIII, and for a birthday piece the plain version usually reads better.
One practical note. Long years in Roman numerals get very long. 1998 becomes MCMXCVIII, which is nine characters. On a small chest placement that means small letters, and small letters are harder to stitch cleanly. If the numeral runs long, consider a larger placement or plain numbers instead. Our placement guide covers how much room each position gives you.
Long numerals get small fast
The chest placement stays the same size. See what happens to the letters.
Plain numbers. Four characters and big, clean letters. For a birth year on its own this usually reads best.
Six characters. Still comfortable on a small chest placement.
Nine characters. Same space, so every letter shrinks, and small letters are harder to stitch cleanly. Go for a larger placement or plain numbers.

Choosing a style and colour
Dates suit simple lettering. A date is already an abstract mark, so a decorative script fights with it rather than helping.
Clean block or a restrained serif reads best, particularly at small sizes where fine flourishes turn into a smudge. Our lettering guide goes through the options.
On colour, go for more contrast than feels necessary. A tonal date looks beautiful in a close up photograph and vanishes across a room. If the piece is a gift, the person wants to see it. There is more on this in our thread colour guide.

Matching pieces for two people
The same date on two garments is one of the more common requests, and there are a few ways to handle it.
Identical is the simplest and reads clearly as a pair. Different garment colours with the same date keeps the connection without matching outfits, which suits people who would find matching awkward. And splitting the design, with the date on one and initials on the other, works if you want them to be a set rather than a copy.
Sizing is the thing that goes wrong here. Two people rarely take the same size, and a personalised piece cannot be exchanged. Our measuring guide is worth five minutes before you order two of anything.
Before you order: check these
Personalised pieces cannot be returned or exchanged for a change of mind, because a garment with somebody's date on it cannot go to anyone else. That makes the checks below worth doing properly.
Convert the date twice. Work it out, then work it out again from scratch rather than rereading your first attempt. Subtraction pairs like IV and IX are where errors hide.
Confirm day first or month first. XIV.II reads differently from II.XIV.
Read the characters aloud as you type them. Most mistakes are typing errors, not conversion errors. We stitch exactly what you enter.
Check the size. Sizing is the other thing we cannot fix afterwards.
Count your timeline backwards. Custom pieces are stitched after you order, so they leave us within 7 days, with delivery on top of that. If it is for an anniversary, work back from the date and leave room.
If a piece arrives damaged, defective, or with the wrong text stitched on it because we made the error, that is different and we will replace it. The detail is on our shipping and returns page.
